Here we meet Nicola Carey-Shine who won the Mumpreneur of the Year Award in 2018

Learn to Shine is an award winning Education consultancy and Special Educational Needs provision in English, Maths and Creative Arts. I set up my business from scratch during maternity leave from teaching and management in a school, seeing first-hand the lack of suitable support for pupils with special educational needs. My pupils’ needs are diverse and include, Mutism, Autism, Foetal alcohol syndrome, ADHD, and complex behavioural and emotional difficulties. Some of my favourite moments have included seeing one of my students, who suffers Mutism, deliver a speech by herself, and when one of my pupils with Autism made 6 years progress in reading age, in just 12 months. I am rated as an ‘outstanding’ practitioner, with over 12 years’ experience in the classroom, and see each of my pupils and their parents as ‘part of the family’. My experience as Head of Year in an extremely large London comprehensive school helps me anticipate the social and emotional needs of all of my students, and the services available to them. I have delivered Art workshops for ‘The Princes Trust’ and numerous secondary and primary school children. I also coach parents to support them with their child’s unique behaviour and personality.

What made you enter the Kent Women in Business Awards?

A parent of one of my students nominated me, as she was touched by the progress her son made in his education and social skills.

What advice would you give to someone looking to enter these Awards?

Set quiet time aside to really take stock of your business and all the things you do. Unfortunately, a woman often needs to work twice as hard in business to be taken half as seriously. Do not be afraid to champion yourself, all that you have achieved and use the awards to really BLOW YOUR OWN TRUMPET!
